Immediate Steps for Those Impacted

Insurance Claim

Contact your carrier immediately to initiate a claim. Document damage with photos/videos before cleanup and keep receipts for all expenses related to temporary housing and repairs.

FEMA Assistance

Apply ASAP (even if you have insurance) at FEMA Disaster Assistance or call 1-800-621-3362. You may qualify for $770 in emergency aid for to help cover critical needs.

Mortgage Relief

Contact your lender about forbearance options that may temporarily suspend or reduce payments. Document all communications.

Property Tax Relief

If damage exceeds $10,000, you may qualify for a temporary reduction in assessed value, which could lower your property taxes. Claims must be made within 12 months, with damage documentation provided to the assessor’s office. Learn more here: Property Relief for Properties Impacted By a Disaster

SBA Disaster Loans

Homeowners and renters may qualify for low-interest loans to cover uninsured losses. Apply at SBA Disaster Assistance or call 1-800-659-2955 to learn more about your eligibility and begin the application process.

Essential Tasks
  • Set up a P.O. Box and inform us of any changes to your mailing address.
  • Contact utility companies to stop service.
  • Contact your doctor’s office for prescription replacements.
  • Replace essential documents (IDs, birth/marriage certificates, insurance cards, medical records, property/vehicle documents, tax returns, trust documents).
Tax and Financial Information
Extended Tax Deadlines:

All LA County taxpayers (and those with LA County tax professionals) have until October 15, 2025, to file 2024 federal and CA returns and make payments. This includes estimated taxes, pass-through entity taxes, and individual/corporate returns. Please refer to the IRS for updated information: Tax Relief in Disaster Situations

Casualty (or Theft) Loss Deductions:

If your primary residence was destroyed in a federally declared disaster, you may be able to deduct the loss, subject to limitations.

Property Values:

Rebuilt homes often appreciate by 37-65%, with insurance typically covering rebuilding costs rather than just market value. Post-disaster infrastructure improvements can further enhance long-term property values, and most areas see recovery within 2-3 years.

Important Items to Remember
  • Keep detailed records of all communications with insurance companies, FEMA, and other agencies. Note the date, time, and name of each person you speak with.
  • Create a comprehensive inventory of damaged or lost items, including approximate value and age of each item.
  • Be cautious of potential scams. Work only with licensed contractors and verify all disaster assistance workers’ credentials.
Preparing for the Future

Natural disasters like this remind us of the importance of being prepared. We want to share some gentle recommendations that could help protect you and your loved ones in the future:

Think of Your Insurance as Your Safety Net
  • Schedule an annual review of your coverage limits for fire, earthquake, and flood protection. Please let us know if you need a referral to an insurance agent.
  • Ensure your coverage reflects today’s replacement costs, not just your purchase price.
  • Document your home and belongings with a quick video walk-through every six months.
  • Keep digital copies of important documents in a secure cloud storage service.
Simple Steps for Peace of Mind
  • Create a basic emergency evacuation plan with your family.
  • Keep an updated list of important contacts and policy numbers.
  • Consider a fireproof safe for crucial documents.
  • Take photos of any home improvements you make.
  • Make a digital record of valuable items and keep receipts.
